New support group for head and neck cancer patients

Hayley Steptoe

A new support group has been launched in Northamptonshire for people who have experienced head and neck cancer and their families.

The Swallows Northamptonshire is a branch of the national charity of the same name, and provides a way for people who have been through the significant trauma of this kind of cancer to support each other and access further medical and therapy support.

Hayley Steptoe, Kettering General Hospital’s head and neck clinical nurse specialist, has formed the group with her counterpart at Northampton General Hospital – and the support of some of the patients she has met over the last 18 months since her role was created.

She said: “I am hoping the new group will be a positive and uplifting way of supporting head and neck cancer patients in their ongoing journey through life. Long-term rehabilitation and support is limited for these patients in Northamptonshire and I wanted to work with patients to address this. We plan to meet in Wellingborough and already have a number of patients who are interested in taking part.”
